How to Select the Right Welding Outlet (Olet)

Branch connections are a fundamental part of piping systems. While standard tees are often used, "Olets" (Branch Connection Fittings) provide a more robust and versatile solution, especially for high-pressure applications or when the branch size is significantly smaller than the header size. The most common types are Weldolet, Sockolet, and Thredolet.

1. Weldolet (Butt-Weld Outlet)

The Weldolet is the most popular branch connection fitting. It is designed to minimize stress concentrations and provide integral reinforcement.

  • Connection: It is butt-welded to the outlet pipe.
  • Application: Ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. It offers a smooth flow transition and full pipe strength.
  • Size Range: Available for a wide range of pipe sizes and schedules.

2. Sockolet (Socket-Weld Outlet)

The Sockolet is similar to the Weldolet but features a socket for the branch pipe to sit in.

  • Connection: The branch pipe is inserted into the socket and fillet-welded.
  • Application: Typically used for smaller branch sizes (usually up to 2 inches) and lower pressure ratings compared to Weldolets. It is easier to install as it doesn't require beveling the branch pipe.
  • Class: Available in 3000# and 6000# pressure classes.

3. Thredolet (Threaded Outlet)

The Thredolet is designed for threaded connections.

  • Connection: The branch pipe is screwed into the threaded outlet.
  • Application: Used for low-pressure applications where welding is not feasible or where disassembly might be required. Common in water lines or instrument connections.
  • Class: Available in 3000# and 6000# pressure classes.

Other Types of Olets

While the three above are the most common, other specialized Olets exist:

  • Elbolet: Used to create a branch connection on an elbow.
  • Latrolet: Used for 45-degree lateral connections.
  • Nipolet: A one-piece fitting that combines a weldolet and a nipple.

Selection Summary

To choose the right Olet, ask yourself:

  1. What is the branch size? (Large -> Weldolet, Small -> Sockolet/Thredolet)
  2. What is the pressure rating? (High -> Weldolet)
  3. What is the connection type? (Butt-weld, Socket-weld, or Threaded)
